Pound It Out
13 Feb
Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be amazed. And exhausted. I checked out a new class at the gym this week and am completely, utterly, absolutely hooked. What is this magical class? It’s like nothing you’ve ever tried. It brings together rhythm and sweat, without ever asking you to dance. It let’s you – literally – pound out any frustration, without a punching bag or conjuring up images of your ex. It leaves your muscles aching without running an inch.
Again, what is this magical class? It’s Pound, a class recently developed by a pair of drummers in California. These two totally awesome chics (who I haven’t met, I just assume they’re bad-ass) found a way to reinvigorate the typical group fitness class. Alternating between rock ‘n roll and R&B tracks, we spent 45 minutes literally pound weighted drumsticks on the floor, overhead and on our knees.
The energetic and amazing (yes I’m gushing a lot here) instructor kept me interested the entire time, a tough fete in my world. At times I felt like I could actually follow a beat. And when everyone pounded, in unison, along with a Nirvana song, all while keeping our legs raised and our core tight, the sound was nothing short of inspirational. We were doing it. We were this band of misfit, fitness-hungry girls getting the past week out of our systems, setting up the week ahead.
How better to spend an otherwise-lazy Sunday afternoon? The class was good enough to convince me to sign up for a monthly membership. Convincing me to spend $100 a month on anything, that’s nothing short of amazing. And my obliques still hurting when I wake up the next day? Unheard of! If there’s a Crunch in your ‘hood, go to the website, get a free one-week guest pass, and check out Pound. If there isn’t, ask your local gym to bring in a Pound instructor. You won’t regret it, I promise!
